The garden

Every year the garden gets a little bit larger and more elaborate. If we're in this house long enough, that entire corner of the yard may become one big garden. I can't take any of the credit for planting or planning (that would be Farmer Joe), but I sure can benefit from the results. We've had kale, lettuce, spinach, peas, and beans (the kind you shell and dry to cook later). We're swimming in lemon cucumbers and cherry tomatoes at the moment, a bit late with the cool summer we had (yes that's past tense - today was definitely a fall day).

We also had raspberries and blueberries, which Petra loved to help pick. It took a while to get her to understand that it works better if she leaves the green ones on the plant, and pick and eat the blue ones. Not intuitive for a two-year old. The raspberries were a bit easier since they ripened more quickly. She loved to make me wait on the other side of the yard while she went to pick raspberries "by myself."

It's fun to water!

Joe also threw in a packet of wildflower seeds, so we've had a very pretty garden this year. Not sure what most of them are, other than the sunflowers and marigolds, but they are nice to look at. The hummingbirds and bees loved them.

These photos were taken about a month ago - since then, one sunflower plant has grown to 11 or 12 feet, which is amazing. You can see it over the hedge!
